IC 434 in natural light. This is a raw, unedited 10 minute exposure using a standard light pollution filter just as the image appears after coming off the camera. Light pollution tends to wash-out an image and can also give the image what's called color cast. A filter is used to remove all the unwanted wavelengths of light - like that from sodium and mercury vapor lighting - thus increasing contrast and allowing for longer exposures. In this case I combined many hours of these images with several hours of the hydrogen alpha filtered images to produce the final image which shows rich color and detail.
